Y ears ago my dad and I came across a large set of cassette tapes from one of my favorite preachers of all time, Dr. Vance Havner. Yes, I did say cassette tapes. As a young preacher I listened to each sermon with open ears, an open heart, and a hunger to grow spiritually. Despite the fact that he was a famous Southern Baptist evangelist, Dr. Havner grew up in the same County as I did, Catawba County, NC. Even though he passed before I was old enough to know who he was, as I listened I felt close to him. As we made our way through the case of sermons we came to a sermon entitled, “The Crags or the Cages”. Little did I know that I was about to listen to a message that God would use to influence my life until this day.
I must confess that when I first read the title of the message, I too asked, “What is a crag?” That was the first time I’d ever heard the term and genuinely didn’t know what it was. My dad corrected my ignorance and explained that a crag was a steep rock that was usually found at higher elevations on a mountain. It was then that I took my newly enlarged vocabulary and placed the cassette tape into the player and off we went. Dr. Havner began to preach about living a life of freedom from the cages of this world and soaring high above it among the crags. He preached of a life that wasn’t bound by rules and regulations, or even religious politics, but a life that was free to follow Jesus Christ with the joy and peace that only He can give. Dr. Havner challenged the congregation to soar high like an Eagle.
Many years later I’ve never forgotten his message. I’ve listened to that sermon dozens of times and each time I listen God speaks to my heart. Since the first time God spoke to me through Dr. Havner’s message I’ve labored to live a life among the crags. I started Crag Ministries for the sole purpose of trying to encourage others to learn to live a life among the crags. So many of God’s people are bound up in the cages of creeds, covenants, and religion that they fail to experience the freedom and joy that comes with knowing Jesus Christ as their personal Savior. It is my hope that Crag Ministries can be a tool in the hands of God to free those individuals from their cages and help them learn to dwell among the crags.
Please help us pray that God will use this ministry in a mighty way. We are excited about the release of my new book entitled, Divorce happened to Me available in June 2014. We are also currently working on the development of a Divorce Recovery program that will coincide with my new book entitled, “M.E.N.D.E.D.” We are also praying about several conferences and possible crusades in the future. Until then, I hope that you will enjoy the resources we’ve made available to you on the site and if we can help you in any way please feel free to contact us.
