Showers and Flowers
“I will give you rain in due season”
It is hard for me to think about the month of April without thinking about the little phrase we were taught as children, “April showers bring May flowers”. As the years pass by that cute little saying almost always yields itself to be true. April is a season filled with cloudy days and rain, while May is often blessed with sunshine and the blossom and bloom of new flowers. I myself am not a huge fan of rainy days. I like to be outside and feel the sun on my face and enjoy its warm embrace. Yet, as I pondered upon the phrase, “April showers bring May flowers” it occurred to me that we all want the flowers, but very few want the showers. The only problem with our desire is that the flowers and the showers are linked together. It is impossible to have the beautiful flowers of May without the showers of April. So, in order to enjoy the flowers we have to endure the showers.
In Leviticus 26:4 God tells the children of Israel, “I will give you rain in due season, and the land shall yield her increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit.” God tells his children that the land will be fertile and the trees will produce fruit which they will enjoy, but first “I will give you rain in due season”. I’m certain the children of Israel would have loved to have instantly had the blessing of the fruit, but it was only after God gave them rain that they could enjoy the fruit.
The lesson that I’m trying to share with you in this month’s newsletter is that often before God gives you the blessing you desire, he first gives you rain. Often times when we see it raining we don’t recognize that anything is taking place, but in reality the rain is working a miracle in the soil to allow the nutrients of the soil to produce growth and life. In life we often go through seasons of problems, struggles, and difficulties that are like rainy days that seem like nothing is taking place. Yet, just as the rain works a miracle on the soil, the rain of problems and struggles works a miracle on our soul and prepares us to be blessed and to be a blessing to others. If you’re going through a rainy season in life, recognize that God is giving you that rain so that he may help you to grow and be more beautiful down the road. Thank God for the showers that brings the flowers!
