The autumn season is certainly in full swing. The leaves have not only changed colors, but are falling from their limbs into our gutters and lawns. It is a unique season that reminds us that summer is past and winter is drawing near. As marvelous as the autumn season is, it should not only remind us of the beauty and wonder of God’s creation, but it should also remind us that our time to labor in God’s field will also one day come to an end. A week ago, while reading in Jeremiah, God reminded me of our need for immediate obedience to God and his Word. If you’re not familiar with the book of Jeremiah, it is a book where God confronts His children about their sin, and pleads with them to return to following him. Chapter after chapter we read of God’s longsuffering and merciful warnings for Judah to repent. Despite all of the barricades and flashing lights to turn around, God’s children refused to repent. Like many today they chose to delay dealing with their sin, and their delay turned into devastation. Jeremiah 8:20 says, “The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.” They waited too long to act and they passed God’s deadline for obedience. What a sobering and fearful thought it is to pass God’s deadline for obedience. The prayer and petition of my heart is that the words of Jeremiah 8:20 will stir your hearts as it did mine, and that it might motivate us to immediate obedience in our walk with God. May God help us to recognize that time is fleeting and we need to be everlastingly at the work of reaching souls for Jesus Christ! So, as we enjoy this beautiful season, may we also be reminded that one day the spiritual summer will be ended, and the harvest will pass.
